First Global Community College
First Global Community College is an English language school, modeled after an American community College, located in Nongkhai, Thailand. Nongkhai is the gateway to Laos, sits on the Mekong River, was named in 2002 as one of the fifteen best places for Americans to retire by the American Association of Retired People. Life is comfortable and living costs extremely low. The smiling Thai people welcome foreigners, and FGCC is serving students who otherwise might not find an opportunity for higher education. Nongkhai is in the region of I-Saan, the poorest part of this Southeast Asian nation, and students are typically those from lower income families. After two years at FGCC they speak English well, enter the world of work, or continue their studies at one of several universities that accept the transfer credit of the small college. Instructors are mostly volunteers who have come from over a dozen nations. Dr. Culton serves as the United States Representative of FGCC and currently is concentrating on helping the College recruit volunteer teachers across the curriculum, and helping to raise funds for the support of the College. FGCC also plays host to groups of college and university students from other nations.
Instructors Needed
Teachers at FGCC are volunteers, receive monthly expenses, housing, a wonderful learning experience, and the thanks of pleasant Thai students. Teaching for a year or more at FGCC is a great opportunity for retired faculty, or for younger university graduates who wish to add a college teaching experience to their resume. Teachers must be university graduates, most have Masters or Doctorates.
Contributions Welcome
A donation of $250 will pay the tuition of a student at FGCC for an academic year. Twelve thousand dollars will pay for the expenses of the College President or Vice President for a year. Persons wishing to help and who have a business in the United States that accepts credit cards can also lower their credit card costs while contributing to the support of deserving Thai students. Contact Dr. Culton if you are a businessperson who wants to save operating expenses while helping to educate deserving Thai students.
Study Abroad at FGCC
First Global Community College offers custom tailored study abroad programs to colleges and universities from other nations. Students can study in English in a variety of disciplines, with lectures offered by specialists associated with and teaching at FGCC. With Laos just across the Mekong River and a strategic location that has produced a long history of contact with Vietnam, Nongkhai is a great location for studies centering on Southeast Asia, anthropology, community development, Buddhism, politics, health care, and other subjects. The College is now planning a film making program for Santa Barbara City College. Each year Modesto Junior College and California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo bring a group of students who study and participate in programs offered in the community.
